In month six of the Master Key Experience (has it already been six months!), we are on Scroll VI in Og Mandino’s book The Greatest Salesman In the World. This book in general is an amazing read as each of us in one way or another is a salesperson. Not in the traditional sense of the word, but ultimately you are selling someone when sharing with him or her an idea or belief or suggestion. Truth be told you’re actually selling you! But back to the focus of this post, Scroll VI, where Og talks about becoming a master of emotions. A timely read to be sure!

Og mentions how each of us is a part of nature, so the first point he makes is that just like nature constantly changes, we change.

“Inside me is a wheel, constantly turning from sadness to joy, from exultation to depression, from happiness to melancholy.”

Og Mandino, The Greatest Salesman In the World

The key, according to Og, is to master this wheel. I must admit it definitely isn’t easy to do so when faced with the multitude of daily challenges and joys every day at home, at work or when out and about. In fact it is definitely a never-ending battle. Thankfully guidance is provided on how to accomplish this, a plan of action to counteract the tools of negativity if you will. Here’s a snapshot of a portion of the suggested plan:

“If I feel depressed I will sing

If I feel sad I will laugh

If I feel fear I will plunge ahead

If I feel poverty I will think of wealth to come.”

Obvious things to do but as mentioned earlier difficult things at times, particularly on days when things may be tough. Yet Og also warns to guard against the opposite as well. He points out that these things can be just as destructive as sadness, self-pity and fear in life if not kept in check.

“If I become overconfident I will recall my failures

If I overindulge I will think of past hungers

If I attain great wealth I will remember one unfed mouth

If I become overly proud I will remember a moment of weakness.”

Yep there are two sides to every coin! And a terrific reminder that it is important to keep the ego in check on the path to becoming the greatest salesman.

The road to achieving my definite purpose in life will not be easy, if it was everyone would commit to doing it. It’s why I’m so grateful for tools like this that are being acquired through the Master Key Experience that are making it easier. By applying this law of mastering my emotions I am on my way to controlling my destiny and living out my bliss.

“Henceforth I will recognize and identify the mystery of moods in all mankind and in me.”

Just one of the things a self-directed thinker does!
